About Stigliano
- The tourist flow in the area is quite intense thanks to the pleasant panoramic position enjoyed by the town. The presence of structures, services, schools and job opportunities on site causes a notable centripetal tendency towards the neighboring municipalities of the Matera hills. In the month of August the community comes alive with a series of recreational events that take place in the historic centre; on 4 and 5 October the feast of Santa Teresa is celebrated and the chestnut festival takes place, with the tasting of desserts based on this characteristic fruit, while in February, on the occasion of the carnival, the parade of floats takes place; the feast of Santa Maria is celebrated on September 27th. A typical local tradition is that represented by the ritual of the “funeral lament”. The Patron Saint, Sant’Antonio, is celebrated on 13 June.
- The most widespread economic activity in the municipal area is agriculture, centered on the production of cereals, in particular wheat, vegetables, fodder, grapes, olives, citrus fruits and fruit. In addition to work in the fields, livestock breeding is also practiced, especially sheep, goats and poultry but also cattle, pigs and horses. The industrial sector is also present in the local economic framework, with some activities in the following sectors: construction, food, metallurgical, wood, building materials and the production and distribution of gas and electricity.
